Transforming your backyard into an outdoor dining oasis doesn’t have to break the bank. A well-designed outdoor kitchen area can bring life to your home and create a space for entertainment, relaxation, and delicious meals under the open sky. Here's how to budget for your dream outdoor kitchen by breaking down the average costs of essential features, from dining areas to appliances.

1. Outdoor Dining (Seating)

Creating a comfortable dining area sets the stage for memorable gatherings. Outdoor seating can range from basic picnic tables to stylish dining sets, depending on your vision and budget.

  • Low-End Options: Plastic or resin patio furniture can cost as little as $200 to $500 for a full set, including a table and chairs. These are durable and weather-resistant but may lack the upscale aesthetic.

  • Mid-Range Solutions: Wooden or metal dining sets typically start around $700 and go up to $2,000. Look for treated wood or powder-coated metal to ensure longevity.

DIY OPTION: For all you Do-It-Yourselfers, consider DIY seating options like built-in benches made of cinder blocks and wood planks for a rustic look on a shoestring budget! We'd love to see some pictures if you do this!

2. Countertop Space

Countertops are the backbone of your outdoor kitchen, providing space for food prep, serving, and more.

  • Low-End Options: Concrete countertops are budget-friendly, with costs averaging $50 to $75 per square foot. They can be poured and finished onsite, offering a custom look without the custom price.

  • Mid-Range Solutions: Prefabricated granite or tile countertops range from $75 to $150 per square foot. These provide a polished look but may require more maintenance over time.

🔥Budget Tip: Weather-treated wood countertops or butcher block surfaces are also an alternative for a warm and affordable touch.

3. Outdoor Kitchen Appliances Cost (Stove, Fridge, Grill, Etc.)

Appliances are the heart of your outdoor kitchen, bringing functionality and flair to your space. Prioritize your must-haves to stay within budget.

  • Grill: A basic freestanding charcoal grill can start as low as $100, while propane models range from $300 to $1,000. Built-in grills begin at $1,500 and can soar into the $5,000 range for premium models.

  • Refrigerator: Compact outdoor fridges start around $300 and climb to $1,500 for larger, stainless steel options. Skip the fridge entirely by using coolers for drinks and snacks.

  • Stovetop or Burner: Side burners are a cost-effective solution for outdoor cooking, with prices starting at $150.

🔥Budget Tip: Invest in a multipurpose grill that combines a smoker, grill, and stovetop to save on multiple appliances.

4. Sheltering Your Space

While not essential, adding a shelter enhances the functionality of your outdoor kitchen by protecting it from the elements.

  • Low-End Options: A basic retractable awning or shade sail costs between $100 and $500. These are quick to install and easy on the budget.

  • Mid-Range Solutions: Permanent pergolas or gazebos can start at $1,000 and go up to $5,000, depending on the materials and size.

🔥Budget Tip: Use DIY shade options like stringing outdoor curtains between posts or setting up a large market umbrella over the dining area.

They also have outdoor countertop and kitchen sets that are sold together (some have wheels!) They usually include a sink, gas stovetop, and some counter space. This would be great to save you on the headache of the whole custom-counter and appliance decision. It limits you on the creativity but it's a great start if you're comfortable with the spend!

Check on Etsy, Ikea or your local Home Depot to start. Another option could be to buy just the gas stovetop portion, and install it anywhere on your counter where you want the tank to be. There are really endless options!

Here's an example of one I found on Ikea for about $1,300. This would be a great start! Now all you need is a table and chairs, water/propane fixtures, some shading options, and you're pretty much done! Rough estimate would be $5,000. You can do it!

Making It Affordable

To create your outdoor kitchen without overspending, focus on one feature at a time. Start with a grill and some seating, then expand as your budget allows. Shop for deals at the end of the summer season or consider repurposing materials for a custom, budget-friendly design.

A beautiful and functional outdoor kitchen doesn’t have to be a financial burden. With careful planning and smart choices, you can bring your vision to life at a price that works for you. We specialize in this aspect - so if you need some help, feel free to reach out! We love a good project.
