After a long winter of snow, ice and salt, your deck is ready to breathe and shine again. Spring is the time to show it some love so it’s ready for backyard barbecues, lazy evenings, and everything in between. A little spring deck care now saves big repairs later, and makes your outdoor living space look and feel its absolute best saving you money over time. And if you ever need help with your deck maintenance, just contact us and we'd be happy to help you!

1. Start Off With A Clean Sweep

Remove leaves, branches, and debris that have piled up over the colder months. A stiff broom is perfect for this first pass. Give extra attention to corners and between boards where gunk tends to settle. This keeps moisture from lingering and helps you spot any damage early. A nice sweep is satisfying!

2. Deep Inspection

Check your deck for loose boards, popped nails, or wobbly railings. Wood expands and contracts through the seasons, and that movement can cause fasteners to work themselves loose. Catching these issues now can prevent them from becoming safety hazards later.

3. Spring Deck Wash

Once your deck is cleared off and inspected, give it a deep clean. No matter what your deck is made of, regular washing is key to preserving its beauty and lifespan. But not all materials are created equal!

For Wood Decks:

Use a wood-specific deck cleaner to lift away mildew, dirt, and old stains. A power washer can be used with care - keep the pressure under 1,200 PSI and work with the grain to avoid splintering. Always let it dry completely before sealing or staining.

For Composite Decks:

Composite decking resists rot and fading, but it’s not immune to dirt, pollen, or mildew. Use a soft-bristle brush and a non-toxic cleaner made for composite materials. Do not use bleach. It can damage the surface and fade the color over time. If you use a power washer, keep the pressure low (under 1,500 PSI) and maintain a distance of at least 12 inches from the surface. Too close and you risk etching the boards (and can effect warranties).

For PVC Decks:

PVC is low-maintenance, but not zero-maintenance. Dirt and grime still settle in, especially after winter. A mild soap and water mix is usually all you need. Use a soft brush or cloth, no harsh scrubbers or scouring pads. Avoid rubber mats, which can cause discoloration, and never use solvents or abrasive cleaners. These decks are durable, but they appreciate a gentle touch.

Always rinse thoroughly after cleaning—leftover soap or cleaner can leave a film that dulls your deck’s finish. And try to clean your deck on a cloudy day or in the morning, when the sun won’t dry the cleaner too fast.

4. Reseal or Re-stain

A fresh coat of sealer or stain not only makes your deck look great, it also protects it from UV rays, rain, and rot. If water doesn’t bead on the surface anymore, it’s time to recoat. Give us a shout if you need help or recommendations.

5. Replace or Refresh Furniture

This is semi-optional, but make sure you are also checking your furniture for rust, mold, and loose legs or bases. If it's wobbly, it's time to fix it or replace it. A quick cleaning and maybe a new cushion or two can make your deck feel like a brand-new space.
